Walt Disney Animation Studios has been part of the open source community since the Academy Software Foundation's founding in 2018, but being a good member of that community takes more than just running the tools. This talk walks through Walt Disney Animation Studios' relationship with open source in three parts: why open source is foundational to making a film at the scale and ambition of a project like Zootopia 2; how the studio's internal Evals process vets every piece of technology, commercial or open source, before it ships into production; and what's actually running in the pipeline today, from OpenEXR and OpenColorIO to recently-joined ASWF project OpenPGL. We'll close with a real, shot-level look at a scene from the film and exactly which open source projects touched it.
